Ba-e

San Agustin Parish

The Augustinian, Fr. Martin de Rada, built the first church of Ba-é at the site called Aplaya in 1571 under the advocacy of San Agustin. It was the first Christian mission in Laguna province. The mission became a parish on 30 April 1578. Administration was transferred to the Franciscans on 23 November 1737; Fr. Domingo Martorel was appointed as parish priest. Ba-e was capital of Laguna until 1688, when Pagsanjan was named capital. In 1804, the town site was transferred inland and a new church of stone built under Fr. Geronimo Hervas. The stone church was destroyed during World War II (1944-45). The church was rebuilt by Fr. Alejandro Vermorel, 1953.

Heritage Features: Though renovated some of the 19th century church remains. The church facade is simple and straight forward following the neoclassic idiom.
